Current patch decision guide
When to pick Ming, when to avoid them, and how to adapt your build.
Ming is a situational Roam Support who wants to protect priority carries from burst engages. Public guide data shows a build centered on Knowledge Gem, Boots of Resistance, Crimson Shadow, paired with Heal, used to protect the marksman, set vision, and engage on cooldown windows. Pick him when the draft lets Ming reach the targets his kit is designed to threaten; avoid when the matchup denies the windows his kit needs.
Pick Ming when
- The enemy team has burst threats that need to be absorbed by reliable shields
- Your team has the structure to use his ability to protect the marksman, set vision, and engage on cooldown windows, since Ming delivers utility, vision, and timely peel for the carries.
- The enemy draft includes Cirrus, Menki, and Wuyan, who appear in counter data as matchups Ming can pressure.
Avoid Ming when
- The enemy plays sustained damage rather than burst, which shields cannot absorb in single windows
- Your team needs a damage pick more than Ming's specialty, leaving the role unfilled if you commit here.
- A stronger pick in the same role is open and the matchup does not specifically reward Ming's Team Buffs.

Build decisions
Default roam path
Public build references for Ming recommend Knowledge Gem, Boots of Resistance, Crimson Shadow, Crimson Shadow - Radiance, Dawnlight, and Augur's Word, with Fate, Hunt, and Harmony arcana. Run Heal as the battle spell. Use this as the baseline support plan before adapting to the enemy draft.
Situational item pivots
Spare options listed in build data include Savant's Wrath, Succubus Cloak, Sage's Sanctuary, and Destiny. Treat these as situational swaps when the default path is not enough — for example, swapping in defensive items against burst comps or penetration items against stacked armor.
Matchup logic
Timing the shield
Shields are wasted if applied before the enemy commits damage. Read the enemy engage skill, time the shield to overlap the burst window, and refresh once the cooldown is up.
Role positioning
Ming is a Roam pick whose value depends on utility, vision, and timely peel for the carries. Stick to the role plan rather than forcing fights his kit is not designed to win.
Synergies
Public synergy data lists Arli, Meng Ya, and Shouyue as strong partners for Ming. Plan engages around Arli's setup window, then second-engage with Peace - Longevity.
Common mistakes
- Pre-shielding before the engage actually starts, wasting the absorb window before damage lands.
- Engaging without checking enemy summoner-spell cooldowns, which often decide whether Ming's commit reaches the target alive.
- Forgetting vision while looking for picks — losing the marksman because the support roamed without setting wards is a recurring mistake.
Background
Star Teller
“The flowers are in bloom, nurtured by artifice.”
A dashing diviner who can see the truth hidden in hexagrams and people's hearts. This strange man appeared in Chang'an one day and made it his home. To the people there, he is known only as the Peony Diviner. They do not know where he came from, but he has the ability to predict the future with incredible accuracy—even the Empress herself has solicited his services. However, talent doesn't necessarily make life in Chang'an easy. A certain judge has been amongst the most suspicious of Ming's motives. Ming's response to all such suspicions is a smile, hidden under which is his true intention: to take back the Great Wall.
