Current patch decision guide

When to pick Pei, when to avoid them, and how to adapt your build.

Updated 2026-04-25

Pei is a situational Jungle Assassin who wants to wear down enemies from range before the team-fight engages. Public guide data shows a build centered on Relentless Blade, Boots of Dexterity, Axe of Torment, paired with Smite, used to clear camps efficiently and convert pressure into ganks. Pick him when the draft lets Pei reach the targets his kit is designed to threaten; avoid when the matchup denies the windows his kit needs.

Pick Pei when

  • Your team wants to siege objectives where ranged poke whittles down defenders
  • Your team can engage first, letting Pei second-wave into low-health targets
  • The enemy draft includes Arthur, Lu Bu, and Wuyan, who appear in counter data as matchups Pei can pressure.

Avoid Pei when

  • The team fight will happen in cramped jungle spaces where poke ranges are minimized
  • Your team has no primary engage, leaving the cleanup pick with nothing to follow up on
  • A stronger pick in the same role is open and the matchup does not specifically reward Pei's Ranged Harass.

Power spikes

Early game: Pei is listed as an early-game threat in public guide data — convert the early window into objectives before scaling picks come online.
Mana sustain online: poke patterns become repeatable once cooldown reduction and mana regen items come online
Late game: cooldowns become short enough that Guarding Stance influences every team fight rather than being a one-shot tool.

Build decisions

Default jungle path

Public build references for Pei recommend Relentless Blade, Boots of Dexterity, Axe of Torment, Rapacious Bite, Master Sword, and Boots of Resistance, with Conflict, Hunt, and Eagle Eye arcana. Run Smite as the battle spell. Use this as the baseline assassin plan before adapting to the enemy draft.

Situational item pivots

Spare options listed in build data include Overlord's Might, Pure Sky, Sage's Sanctuary, Destiny, and Splendor. Treat these as situational swaps when the default path is not enough — for example, swapping in defensive items against burst comps or penetration items against stacked armor.

Matchup logic

Versus hard engage

Pei loses value when forced into close-range fights. Stick with the front line, hold a flash or repositioning skill, and avoid being caught alone in the river.

Role positioning

Pei is a Jungle pick whose value depends on tempo from objectives and cross-map kill threats. Stick to the role plan rather than forcing fights his kit is not designed to win.

Synergies

Public synergy data lists Xiao Qiao, Kongming, and Liang as strong partners for Pei. Plan engages around Xiao Qiao's setup window, then second-engage with Tiger Form.

Common mistakes

  • Spending mana on poke that does not threaten kills, leaving you empty for the actual fight.
  • Engaging first instead of second — cleanup picks lose their value as primary engagers.
  • Engaging without checking enemy summoner-spell cooldowns, which often decide whether Pei's commit reaches the target alive.
  • Pathing predictably and getting tracked by the enemy jungler — vary first clear and rotate based on ward placement rather than muscle memory.

Wait for the first engage to use up enemy defensives, then second-engage to clean up. Manage mana carefully — burning resources on poke leaves nothing for the actual fight window.
