Current patch decision guide
When to pick Flowborn (Mage), when to avoid them, and how to adapt your build.
Flowborn (Mage) are a situational Mid Mage who wants to open fights with a high-commitment burst combo. Public guide data shows a build centered on Boots of the Arcane, Sage's Tome, Frozen Breath, used to farm safely and rotate to side lanes when the wave allows. Pick them when the draft lets Flowborn (Mage) reach the targets their kit is designed to threaten; avoid when the enemy already stacks shields and magic resist.
Pick Flowborn (Mage) when
- Your team lacks reliable burst on isolated picks and needs single-target finishing damage
- Your team needs a setup hero whose Flow Formation creates kill windows for the carry
- The enemy back line is squishy and predictable, giving Arcane Arts an obvious target every fight.
Avoid Flowborn (Mage) when
- The enemy already invested in magic resist and shields that absorb committed burst windows
- The enemy team is loaded with cleanse, dashes, and immunity that bypass crowd control
- A stronger pick in the same role is open and the matchup does not specifically reward Flowborn (Mage)'s Burst.

Build decisions
Default mid path
Public build references for Flowborn (Mage) recommend Boots of the Arcane, Sage's Tome, Frozen Breath, Blood Clan's Grimoire, Insatiable Tome, and Nebulon Wood. Use this as the baseline mage plan before adapting to the enemy draft.
Situational item pivots
Spare options listed in build data include Twilight Stream, Savant's Wrath, Sage's Sanctuary, and Enigma - Moon Goddess. Treat these as situational swaps when the default path is not enough — for example, swapping in defensive items against burst comps or penetration items against stacked armor.
Matchup logic
Versus shielded targets
Heroes with shields or damage reduction blunt Flowborn (Mage)'s burst window. Wait for the shield to lapse before committing Arcane Arts, otherwise the combo wastes the cooldown without finishing the kill.
Role positioning
Flowborn (Mage) are a Mid pick whose value depends on consistent damage output and timely roams. Stick to the role plan rather than forcing fights their kit is not designed to win.
Synergies
Public synergy data lists Zhang Fei, Agudo, and Shouyue as strong partners for Flowborn (Mage). Plan engages around Zhang Fei's setup window, then second-engage with Arcane Arts.
Common mistakes
- Opening fights when the enemy still has full crowd control, getting deleted before damage lands.
- Throwing Flow Formation on the front-line tank instead of saving it for backline carries.
- Engaging without checking enemy summoner-spell cooldowns, which often decide whether Flowborn (Mage)'s commit reaches the target alive.
- Greeding farm in mid lane while side lanes get camped — rotation timing matters more than CS lead in most matchups.
Background
“Only in battle can you learn your own truth.”
According to future historians, Jixia Academy was where it all began. But if we turn back the clock to the present—at the unnoticed gates of Jixia Academy—a student has just returned from his studies abroad... The wheels of fate have begun to turn, and no one can break the cycle already set in motion. You knew you'd end up walking that thorny road, because it was never ice-cold rationality and planning that guided you, but the warmth that arose from within in the moment while fighting alongside your companions.

Skills
Can change Flow states at the Base to enhance stats. Spends 1 stack of Flow to perform an enhanced Basic Attack that deals area damage.
Channels the Flow, reducing the cooldown of other skills by 50%. Also gains 5–9 stacks of Flow based on the number of nearby heroes and minions and recovers Health based on Flow stacks. Damages and knocks back nearby enemies (without applying crowd control).
Deals damage and slows enemies within range, then deals damage over time. Using the skill repeatedly within a short time enhances it, dealing damage and launching or stunning enemies. When new magic circles overlap with the initial one, they increase its damage and refresh its duration. Can spend 4 stacks of Flow to use the skill without triggering cooldown.
Continuously channels a beam to deal damage over time. While the beam is linked with a hero, continuously throws Energy Bombs that deal area damage. Can spend 5 stacks of Flow to stop the skill from entering cooldown after this use.
Playstyle
Hold Arcane Arts for isolated targets rather than blowing it on the front line. Stay near the carry and time shields/heals to overlap the enemy's damage window, not before. Land control on the enemy carry, not the front-line tank — chain follow-up damage from teammates immediately after.
