Current patch decision guide
When to pick Liu Bei, when to avoid them, and how to adapt your build.
Liu Bei is a situational Jungle Fighter who wants to reposition through fights with multiple dashes. Public guide data shows a build centered on Relentless Blade, Boots of Dexterity, Axe of Torment, paired with Smite, used to clear camps efficiently and convert pressure into ganks. Pick him when the draft lets Liu Bei reach the targets his kit is designed to threaten; avoid when the matchup denies the windows his kit needs.
Pick Liu Bei when
- Your team needs a slippery damage threat that survives by movement rather than durability
- The enemy team relies on long-cooldown engage skills that leave them vulnerable post-fight
- The enemy draft includes Lady Zhen, Nuwa, and Xiao Qiao, who appear in counter data as matchups Liu Bei can pressure.
Avoid Liu Bei when
- The enemy stacks point-and-click hard control that bypasses dodging
- The enemy team disengages well, so cleanup windows never open
- A stronger pick in the same role is open and the matchup does not specifically reward Liu Bei's Dash.

Build decisions
Default jungle path
Public build references for Liu Bei recommend Relentless Blade, Boots of Dexterity, Axe of Torment, Rapacious Bite, Master Sword, and Doomsday, with Red Moon, Hunt, and Eagle Eye arcana. Run Smite as the battle spell. Use this as the baseline fighter plan before adapting to the enemy draft.
Situational item pivots
Spare options listed in build data include Ominous Premonition, Sage's Sanctuary, and Destiny. Treat these as situational swaps when the default path is not enough — for example, swapping in defensive items against burst comps or penetration items against stacked armor.
Matchup logic
Versus point-click control
Targeted stuns ignore mobility. Save the longest dash for the moment after the targeted control lands, not before.
Role positioning
Liu Bei is a Jungle pick whose value depends on tempo from objectives and cross-map kill threats. Stick to the role plan rather than forcing fights his kit is not designed to win.
Synergies
Public synergy data lists Donghuang, Guiguzi, and Zhuangzi as strong partners for Liu Bei. Plan engages around Donghuang's setup window, then second-engage with Hearts and Minds.
Common mistakes
- Burning all dashes to engage, leaving none to escape if the engage fails.
- Engaging first instead of second — cleanup picks lose their value as primary engagers.
- Engaging without checking enemy summoner-spell cooldowns, which often decide whether Liu Bei's commit reaches the target alive.
- Pathing predictably and getting tracked by the enemy jungler — vary first clear and rotate based on ward placement rather than muscle memory.
Background
Pointblank
“Loyalty is what's needed the most to get ahead in this world!”
As the lord of Shu, Liu Bei's most fateful decision properly begins with a meeting between the two lords and future enemies, him and his old friend Cao Cao, a very different kind of ruler known for his tyranny and calculating manipulation. It was Liu Bei's acknowledgment of the secret "Heavenly Scrolls" handed into his safekeeping that initially sparked Liu Bei's great war. Liu Bei's journey past the principality of the conniving Duke Du You found him the recipient of an orphaned child due to his reputation for kindness and, unwilling to abandon him to the conflict, agreed to take him into his care. The forces of Liu Bei were then intercepted by a group of feralis who sought to slay the child as well as an equally strong group of ferali hunters opposed to the same. A battle ensued, during which an enchanted box given along with the baby fell out of his swaddling. The box fell on the ground and, breaking, released all the memories that had been locked within by some unknown sorcery of Liu Bei's former life. He looked around at his companions with new eyes and assured in his conviction of an important mission left unfinished in his last life.
