Current patch decision guide
When to pick Lapulapu, when to avoid them, and how to adapt your build.
Lapulapu is a Roam or Clash Lane Support/Tank whose verified public guidance emphasizes frontline protection, early defensive value, Flash, Fate/Harmony/Void-style tank arcana, and crowd-control chains from Island's Blessing into Torrential Blade and Raging Sea. Use him as a protector and disruptor: he starts fights when allies can follow, peels for low-health teammates, and turns narrow objective fights with knockups and slows.
Pick Lapulapu when
- Your team needs a durable roamer who can protect carries while starting fights with knockup control.
- Your allies can follow Island's Blessing and Raging Sea, turning Lapulapu's crowd control into kills or objective pressure.
- The match rewards early rotations, lane assistance, and defensive body-blocking around the Farm Laner.
Avoid Lapulapu when
- Your team already lacks damage and needs a carry threat rather than another low-damage tank/support.
- The enemy can ignore Lapulapu and dive around him unless your backline stays within peel range.
- Your team cannot follow engages, because Lapulapu's control creates windows rather than solo burst kills.

Build decisions
Roam tank core
Lapulapu's official camp build supports his Crowd Control and Team Buffs identity as a Roam tank. Knowledge Gem accelerates his early scaling, Boots of Deftness adds roam speed, and Guardian - Radiance provides area damage and vision to set up his engage. Frigid Charge (group crowd control) reinforces the lockdown his kit is built around.
Layered resistances & peel
The build stacks layered defence: Protector's Cuirass (physical defence and Health) and Cloth Jerkin against physical comps, Clandestine Cape and Succubus Cloak (negates magical damage) against mages, and Overlord's Platemail for raw bulk. Boots of Resistance shortens crowd control while Ominous Premonition (slows attackers) and Blazing Cape add peel for the back line.
Arcana & battle spell
The recommended arcana are Fate, Harmony and Void, supporting a durable initiator that can soak crowd control and survive the dive. Flash is the battle spell, used to find engage angles or to reposition and peel after the initial lockdown lands.
Matchup logic
Protect before chasing
Lapulapu's passive shares defense with the lowest-health nearby teammate. Stay close enough to protect carries before looking for deep engages.
Control chains need follow-up
Guides emphasize Skill 2 engage into Skill 1 and ultimate control. Start only when allies are ready to convert the launch and slows.
Common mistakes
- Diving beyond ally range and losing the passive protection value for your lowest-health teammate.
- Starting fights without follow-up damage, which wastes Lapulapu's knockup and slow windows.
- Playing him like a damage carry instead of a protector who enables teammates through control.
- Saving Raging Sea too long during objective fights where its launch and slow can split the enemy formation.
Background
Reefheart Datu
“This battle.... has yet to end!”
The people of Nectam revered the power of the sea beast Bakunawa without exception, a creature as ruthless, fierce, and changeable as the tide. It was known to all that those who sought its aid paid a price. As the Datu of Nectam, Lapulapu found himself under invasion from a nearby isle, aided by Western adventurers. Refusing to let his rule be threatened, he put everything on the line to rally his forces and strike back. Ultimately, both islands suffered heavy casualties, while the Western adventurers arrived at the last minute, ready to reap the spoils. Lapulapu finally realized that in clinging to power, he had become a pawn in someone else's game. Without hesitation, he entered the island's holy place, knowing the price he would pay—that one day, he would turn to stone in exchange for the sea beast's power to summon the waves. The islanders stood together against the invaders, and the island was returned to them once more. Lapulapu's heart had now become stone. He had no way of knowing when he would be fully transformed into part of the reef, forever standing guard in the shallows. But before that day came, he had work to do. He would rebuild his homeland and strengthen the islands. The fight was far from over...
