Current patch decision guide

When to pick Ao'yin, when to avoid them, and how to adapt your build.

Updated 2026-05-30

Ao'yin is a top-tier Farm Marksman who wants to create engage windows with stuns and slows. Public guide data shows a build centered on Meteor, Boots of Tranquility, Axe of Torment, paired with Flash, used to farm the safe side, scale into late game, and protect priority targets. Pick him when the draft lets Ao'yin reach the back-line scaling window without being caught out; avoid when the matchup denies the windows his kit needs.

Pick Ao'yin when

  • The enemy team has multiple high-mobility threats that need to be locked down before they reach your backline
  • The team draft favors extended team fights where healing scales
  • The enemy team relies on grouped fights or channeled abilities, exactly what Downpour interrupts best.

Avoid Ao'yin when

  • Your team lacks the follow-up damage to convert your control windows into kills
  • The enemy already builds anti-heal items, neutralizing your sustain plan
  • The enemy team is built around answers to Crowd Control, removing the windows Ao'yin's kit needs to perform.

Power spikes

Early game: farm safely behind the support, surviving lane phase to reach the marksman scaling window.
Ultimate online: Riding the Wind extends control duration, making team fights snowball off a single hit
Late game: full build online, Ao'yin reaches the spike public guides describe — extended fights favor him once items are completed.

Build decisions

Core crit & cooldown path

Ao'yin's official camp build leans into his crit and recovery identity. It opens with Meteor (physical attack plus cooldown reduction) and Boots of Tranquility to keep his Dragon Soul skills available, then builds Eternity Blade and Master Sword to convert that uptime into high crit damage and enhanced basic attacks. Axe of Torment is the anti-squishy core that helps him punish backline carries during his control windows.

Anti-tank & survivability pivots

Against frontline-heavy drafts, Starbreaker (anti-tank) is the standard add to cut through stacked armor. The defensive tail of the build — Sage's Sanctuary (on-the-spot resurrect), Destiny (negates fatal damage), Pure Sky and Immovable - Sky Dome (temporary damage reduction), and Blood Rage (temporary shield) — are situational picks layered in when Ao'yin is being focused, trading raw output for the survivability to keep landing his slows and stuns.

Arcana & battle spell

The recommended arcana are Calamity (critical rate), Stealth (physical attack and movement speed), and Eagle Eye (physical attack and physical pierce), matching a crit-oriented marksman that still wants enough mobility to kite. Flash is the default battle spell for creating distance or repositioning to land Ao'yin's knock-back and dive.

Matchup logic

Versus mobility

Dashes and immunity skills bypass Ao'yin's control. Force the enemy mobility before committing Riding the Wind, and aim control on stationary targets like channeling carries.

Role positioning

Ao'yin is a Farm pick whose value depends on sustained ranged damage in extended team fights. Stick to the role plan rather than forcing fights his kit is not designed to win.

Common mistakes

  • Throwing Downpour on the front-line tank instead of saving it for backline carries.
  • Forcing all-ins against opponents already wearing anti-heal — your healing barely activates.
  • Engaging without checking enemy summoner-spell cooldowns, which often decide whether Ao'yin's commit reaches the target alive.
  • Auto-attacking through enemy dive instead of repositioning — losing the marksman in early fights collapses the late-game win condition.

How to choose a build

Start with the safe default badge if the draft looks normal, then swap to burst, anti-tank, sustain, or utility builds when the matchup clearly calls for it.

Skills

passive Hidden Dragon

The Dragon Souls from his last 2 skill uses grant effects to his Basic Attacks, which deal physical damage to up to two enemies. He gains 1 mark upon using skills, for up to 3 marks. Basic Attacks expend all marks for various effects, striking once per mark.

skill1 Flaming Palm

Deals physical damage and true damage. Attaches a Fire Dragon Soul to his sword. Basic Attacks deal more damage when this Soul is attached. Enhanced Basic Attacks will deal both physical damage and true damage.

skill2 Downpour

Deals physical damage and recovers Health upon hit. Attaches a Water Dragon Soul to his sword. Basic Attacks restore Health and Mana when this Soul is attached. Enhanced Basic Attacks will deal physical damage and restore Health, but restore less for hits on non-hero units.

ultimate Riding the Wind

Gains Movement Speed that diminishes over time, deals physical damage, and knocks back enemies. Attaches a Wind Dragon Soul to his sword. Gains Movement Speed while this Soul is attached, 50% extra if on both swords. Enhanced Basic Attacks will deal physical damage and knock back enemies.

ultimate Infinite Vastness

Soars into the sky for up to 4.5s, then dives forward to damage and slow enemies. Landing deals equal damage and applies Dread. Gains Attack Speed and Attack Range. Basic Attacks hit 2 more enemies. Can switch Dragon Souls mid-flight.

Playstyle

Stay near the carry and time shields/heals to overlap the enemy's damage window, not before. Land control on the enemy carry, not the front-line tank — chain follow-up damage from teammates immediately after. Position behind your front-line, save flash for the dive, and let the support set vision.
